The Gozo Bird Breeders Society was founded in the year 2000.
Before that date, the members the society formed part of the Malta Cage Bird
Association. The 1999 committee felt
that with the number of Gozitan members signed up, the experience
accumulated and their capabilities,
it was due time to break away from the Maltese association, and form one for Gozitan
members. Nowadays, more than 120 members
are enlisted to the Gozo Bird Breeders Society.
The principal
target of the Society is to teach its members the art of bird breeding and showing.
It didn’t take long to achieve this aim and with great pleasure one can say
with great success, because the standard of the members’ birds is quite high.
Proof of this is the consistently excellent results obtained by our members
at the annual shows held in
The Committee’s goals and strategies are helping to retain and hopefully improve
this standard. Our members are learning
more about breeding and about the importance of training them to be able to show
them in the various shows organised around the islands and to obtain good results.
For the first time during the December 2003 Annual Show organised by GBBS,
the judging was based on the point system.
It is our belief that this will help in keeping a high standard.
What is our aim? It is the committee’s
main priority to organise during this year more educational meetings.
Speakers considered as an authority on the topic to be discussed will be
invited during these meetings open to all members. These meetings will provide the
opportunity to discuss particular issues and topics, which are basic and important
for the bird breeder. Through discussion,
one can share ideas, thus allowing the members to learn from other breeders’ experience.
Also encouraging new members to join our club is important since in Gozo
reside a lot of bird breeders.
My gratitude goes to all the members of the committee for their help, and to the
members for the support they always show.
Our appreciation also goes to all those people who support financially throughout
the year the Gozo Bird Breeders Society.
